MEDICAL TREATMENT

What laser hair removal is and how it works?

Laser hair removal is a medical method of permanently reducing hair growth, in which a laser beam targets the melanin inside the hair follicle. The light energy converts to heat and damages the structure the hair grows from, so across a course of treatments the number of hairs gradually decreases and those that remain grow back finer and lighter. Timing is what matters. The laser only affects hairs in the anagen phase — the phase of active growth — and at any given moment that accounts for between a fifth and a third of the hair on any area. That is why a single session is never enough: a course of six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart, is what allows us to catch every follicle at the right moment.

Why two lasers instead of one?

We work with two medical lasers: Alma Soprano Titanium and Lumenis LightSheer Desire. They reach the follicle in different ways — Soprano through gradual heating with continuous skin cooling, LightSheer through a stronger, more focused pulse. Having both lets us match the treatment to your skin type, hair colour and thickness, and to the area being treated.

Which laser and which settings suit you is something we assess at the consultation.

  • Medical lasers Alma Soprano Titanium i Lumenis LightSheer Desire
  • Built-in cooling Protects the skin and reduces discomfort during treatment
  • Settings matched to your skin Based on the Fitzpatrick scale and hair structure

Skin type, hair thickness and pigment vary from person to person, and so does the right approach. We assess yours first, then choose the device and settings that suit the specific area.

Step by step

What a treatment looks like

01

Consultation

We assess your skin type, hair colour and thickness, and the methods you have used before. The number of treatments and the price are agreed in advance.

02

Test and settings

We check how your skin responds on a small patch and adjust the energy before moving on to the whole area.

03

Treatment

The area is shaved beforehand. You wear protective glasses while the applicator moves across the skin with cooling. Underarms take a few minutes, full legs 30 to 40.

04

Aftercare and next visit

You receive aftercare instructions and we book your next appointment at the interval that suits your area.

Protocol

Before your treatment and after

Before the treatment

  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your visit. No waxing, epilating or tweezing for at least 4 weeks — the laser needs the full follicle with its root.
  • Avoid sun and sunbeds for 2 weeks before. Freshly tanned skin increases the risk of pigmentation changes.
  • No self-tanning creams for at least 7 days before the treatment.
  • Tell us if you are on any treatment or if your skin has been more sensitive to sunlight recently — this affects the settings we use.
  • Come without cream, deodorant or make-up on the area being treated.

After the treatment

  • Mild redness and a feeling of warmth are normal and pass within a few hours to a day.
  • Use a gentle, soothing cream. No scrubs or rough sponges for 5 to 7 days.
  • SPF 50 on exposed areas for at least 2 weeks — including on cloudy days.
  • No sauna, swimming pool or intense exercise for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Hairs shed 1 to 3 weeks after the treatment. This is not new growth but the treated hairs working their way out. Do not pull them — only shave between treatments.
Honest, upfront

Is laser hair removal right for you?

At the consultation we always tell you what to expect, and in which cases we postpone the treatment or suggest a different solution.

A good choice if…

  • you have dark hair on light or medium skin
  • irritation, ingrown hairs or folliculitis keep coming back after shaving and waxing
  • you want to stop spending time and money on temporary solutions
  • you can start the course outside the period of heavy sun exposure
  • you are looking for a solution for sensitive areas that react to waxing

We postpone or suggest something else if…

  • you have grey, white or very light blond hair — without melanin there is nothing for the laser to target, and it is only fair that we say so upfront
  • you are freshly tanned or just back from the coast — we will wait 2 to 4 weeks
  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding — we postpone the treatment
  • you are on a treatment that increases skin sensitivity to light — we discuss this at the consultation
  • you have an active infection or a skin lesion in the area — that is dealt with first
  • the increased hair growth is caused by an unmanaged hormonal condition — the laser still helps, but alongside proper follow-up and realistic expectations

Why patients choose Imedic?

  • Laser hair removal under medical supervision Laser hair removal isn't our only service. We're a clinic with a full dermatology programme, so if something shows up on your skin during the series — a mole, irritation, anything you're unsure about — you don't need to go looking for another doctor.
  • Experience built over thousands of treatments Ten years of work in aesthetic medicine and dermatology, with laser hair removal part of our practice from the very start.
  • Realistic expectations from the outset We tell you how many treatments are needed and what to expect from your skin and hair. If we think the result will not be what you are hoping for, you will hear it at the consultation — not after several treatments.

Questions and answers

Laser hair removal — frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions our patients ask most often before their first treatment.

Before you decide

How many laser hair removal treatments are needed?

On average, 6 to 8 treatments. During a single session the laser can only act on hairs that are in the anagen phase at that moment — the active growth phase. Since the proportion of those hairs differs from area to area and from person to person, the result builds up over a series rather than in one visit.

The number of treatments depends on the area, the colour and thickness of the hair, your skin phototype and your hormonal status. Darker, thicker hair tends to respond more predictably. Underarms, the bikini line and a man's beard usually need eight sessions or more. We give you an estimate for your area at the consultation, not after your fifth visit.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as warmth and a brief sting rather than pain. The sensation stops as soon as the pulse ends, and any tingling that lingers passes within half an hour to an hour.

The bikini line and the area above the upper lip are more sensitive, as the skin there is thinner and has more nerve endings. Legs and arms are the most comfortable. The first treatment is almost always the least pleasant — as the hair thins out, so does the sensation.

Are the results permanent?

The correct term is permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal of every hair. After a completed series you're left with a few fine, lighter hairs that are far less noticeable than before.

Follicles that were dormant during the course can become active later on, usually due to hormonal changes. That's why a maintenance treatment once or twice a year is recommended — a single session, not a new series.

When will I see the first results?

You'll notice the first thinning after one or two treatments. A clearer difference is usually visible after the third or fourth visit, when the hair becomes sparser, finer and slower to grow back.

This is a process, not a one-off procedure. Consistency matters more than speed — people who follow the full schedule get noticeably better results than those who skip appointments.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Belgrade?

The price depends on the area. All prices by area, both for single treatments and for packages of seven, are listed in the price list on this page — no enquiry and no phone call needed.

A package is always cheaper than paying per treatment, with savings of up to 28% depending on the area. Packages are valid for two years from the first treatment and can be paid in instalments.

Preparation and appointments

Do I need to shave before the treatment?

Yes — shave the area 12 to 24 hours before you come in. Hair on the surface of the skin absorbs laser energy and can cause surface irritation, while the root inside the skin is exactly what we're treating.

Wax, epilators and tweezers should not be used for at least four weeks before the treatment. They pull the hair out along with the root, leaving the laser with nothing to target.

What if I've waxed recently?

We'll wait for the hair to grow back from the root, usually four weeks. A treatment done too early wouldn't be harmful, but it would be pointless — you'd be paying for a session with nothing to act on.

Between treatments in a series, shaving is the only method allowed. A razor shortens the hair but leaves the root intact, which is exactly what we need.

How long is the gap between treatments?

Four to eight weeks, depending on the area. The face and underarms are treated at shorter intervals because the hair grows back faster, while legs and the back need longer breaks.

The interval isn't arbitrary — it's matched to the hair growth cycle in that area. A missed appointment doesn't undo your progress, but it does extend the overall length of the series.

How long does one treatment take?

Smaller areas such as the upper lip or underarms take just a few minutes. Full legs take around 30 to 40 minutes, the back roughly the same.

Your first visit takes longer, as it includes the consultation, an assessment of your skin and a patch test on a small area before we move on to the full region.

Can I have a treatment during my period?

For the intimate area and bikini line it's better to book outside those days — the skin is more sensitive then, so the treatment is less comfortable than usual.

For every other area there's no issue. If your appointment falls during that time, let us know and we'll move it at no charge.

Limitations and safety

Does the laser work on light or grey hair?

Not reliably. The laser targets melanin — the pigment that gives hair its colour. Grey, white and very light blonde hair has none, so there's nothing for the laser to heat.

On dark blonde and light brown hair the result is weaker than on dark hair, but still visible. We assess this at the consultation and tell you honestly before you start a series — not after your third paid session.

Can I have laser hair removal in summer or on tanned skin?

Yes, provided the skin isn't freshly tanned and you use high-factor sun protection consistently. If you've just come back from the coast, we'll wait two to four weeks.

Practically speaking, it's best to start a series in autumn or winter — by summer you'd already be near the end of the cycle, with the fewest restrictions along the way.

Can I have a treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We do not perform the treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

There's no evidence that the laser harms a pregnancy, but as a precaution it isn't carried out. On top of that, the hormonal changes during this period make the response to treatment unpredictable, so the outcome of a series would be uncertain too.

Once you've finished breastfeeding, get in touch and we'll book a consultation.

Are there situations where you won't perform the treatment?

There are. Besides pregnancy and breastfeeding, we postpone or decline the treatment for freshly tanned skin, an active infection or skin lesion in the area being treated, and for certain medical conditions and medications.

That's why the first visit always starts with a consultation. Tell us what medication you're taking and whether you have any diagnosis — we assess on that basis whether and how the treatment can go ahead. A full list of contraindications is available on our laser hair removal page.

After the treatment

What's normal to feel after a treatment?

Mild redness and a feeling of warmth are expected and pass within a few hours to a day. Sometimes there's slight swelling around the follicles, which looks like small bumps and also clears quickly.

In the intimate area the redness lasts somewhat longer than elsewhere, because the skin there is more pigmented and absorbs more energy. That's expected, not a complication.

Why do the hairs only fall out after two weeks?

Because the damaged hair stays in the skin for a while before the skin pushes it out. It looks as though the hairs are growing, when in fact they're being shed.

Don't pull or wax them out — just shave. Pulling would take the root with it, leaving the laser without a target again at your next treatment.

Is maintenance needed after the series is finished?

For most people, yes. After a completed series we recommend one session a year for the body, or once or twice a year for the face.

That's a single treatment, not a new series. The most common reason is follicles that were dormant during the course becoming active, usually because of hormonal changes.
