Double chin removal
A double chin can be reduced when it is made up of smaller fat deposits, sagging skin, or both combined. During an examination, the doctor assesses what dominates in this region and proposes Attiva radiofrequency, Morpheus8 or Ultraformer III, either alone or in combination.
Double chin removal – in brief
| What is being treated | Excess fatty tissue and sagging skin under the chin |
|---|---|
| Treatments | Attiva radio waves, Morpheus8 and Ultraformer III, choice after examination |
| Anaesthesia | Local anaesthetic (Attiva), anaesthetic cream (Morpheus8, Ultraformer III) |
| Number of treatments | Attiva usually 2, Morpheus8 up to 3, Ultraformer III usually 1 |
| Result | More pronounced effect after 4 to 6 weeks, full effect after 2 to 3 months |
| Duration of results | It depends on the treatment, skin condition and weight change; after Ultraformera III 12 to 18 months |
| Recovery | Attiva: mild bruising a few days, swelling up to 14 days; Morpheus8: redness 1 to 3 days; Ultraformer III: no recovery period |
Why does a double chin occur
The double chin is affected by jaw structure, heredity, body weight and skin ageing. It can appear in young and thin people, as the distribution of fatty tissue beneath the chin depends on genetics. When a double chin is caused by excess weight, it reduces with weight loss. When it is hereditary, diet and exercise do not change it.
After weight loss, the fat pad beneath the chin shrinks, but sometimes excess skin remains and does not retract on its own. The aim of treatment is then to tighten this skin.
Over the years, the skin loses collagen and elastin, and the supporting layer beneath it gives way, causing the tissue to drop below the jawline. Therefore, in younger people this is usually a matter of fatty tissue, whereas in older people it is a combination of fatty tissue and sagging skin.
How to reduce a double chin
The choice of treatment depends on whether fatty tissue or sagging skin is dominant beneath the chin. Treatments are performed individually or in combination.
Attiva radio waves
A thin probe is introduced under the skin via a microcannula, under local anaesthesia, and heats the subcutaneous tissue. The heat reduces minor fat deposits under the chin and tightens collagen fibres, thus firming the skin. The temperature is monitored throughout the treatment by a sensor on the cannula and a thermal camera. A more pronounced effect develops over 4 to 6 weeks, and most commonly 2 treatments are performed. After the treatment, a minor bruise at the puncture site is possible, which passes in a few days, and swelling which can last up to 14 days. Read more about the treatment on the page Attiva radio waves.
Morpheus8
Microneedles deliver radiofrequency energy up to 4 mm deep into the facial skin. Morpheus8 tightens the skin of the chin and neck and reduces minor fat pads under the chin, making it a good choice when the skin is sagging and there is little fatty tissue. It is performed using an anaesthetic cream, usually in a series of up to three treatments, and the skin remains red for 1 to 3 days. The full effect is visible after about 3 months. Read more about the treatment on the page Morpheus8. Treatments for sagging neck skin are described on the page neck and décolletage rejuvenation.
Ultraformer III
Focused ultrasound acts at a pre-selected depth while the skin surface remains intact. For the double chin, treatment is carried out at two depths. At 4.5 mm, it acts on the SMAS, the supportive layer that holds the facial tissues, so the jawline is lifted and more clearly defined. A deeper attachment acts on the fatty tissue beneath the chin. The effect develops over two to three months and lasts for 12 to 18 months. Usually, one treatment is sufficient, and you can return to your daily activities immediately afterwards. Read more about the treatment on the page Ultraformer III.
Double chin removal before and after

The double chin is reduced, and the jawline becomes more defined. The photographs show patients before and after chin-subcutaneous fat treatment: the transition between the face and neck is tighter and the contour is more defined.

Double chin removal cost
The price of double chin removal depends on the choice of procedure, the degree of fat tissue and skin laxity. The exact treatment recommendation and price are determined after an examination. You can view approximate prices on the page Price list.
Have you got a question?
Frequently asked questions about the double chin
Can a double chin be reduced with exercises or cream?
Neck exercises and creams do not reduce fat tissue under the chin. Weight loss helps when a double chin is caused by excess weight, but loose skin can remain afterwards. When a double chin is hereditary or involves loose skin, treatment is required.
What device is used to remove a double chin?
We use Attiva radio waves, Morpheus8 and Ultraformer III in Imedic. Attiva works directly on the subcutaneous fat tissue, Morpheus8 tightens the skin the most, and Ultraformer III lifts the supporting layer and jawline. The choice depends on whether fat tissue or sagging skin is dominant.
When are the results visible?
Following Attiva, a more pronounced effect develops over 4 to 6 weeks. The full effect of Morpheus8 and Ultraformer III treatment is seen after 2 to 3 months, once the skin has produced new collagen.
How long does the result last?
The result depends on the treatment and how the skin changes afterwards. After Ultraformer III, the effect lasts 12 to 18 months. The removed fat cells do not return, but the remaining ones can enlarge if body weight increases.
Is the treatment painful?
Attiva is performed under local anaesthesia, while Morpheus8 and Ultraformer III use an anaesthetic cream. A feeling of warmth is experienced during the treatment.
Who should not have the treatment done?
The treatment is not performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in cases of acute skin infection, malignant diseases, and a predisposition to keloids.
