What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a superficial mechanical exfoliation using a diamond tip and vacuum. By removing some of the dead cells from the skin's surface, it can contribute to a smoother and fresher appearance. The intensity is adjusted to the skin and the region being treated.

It differs from deeper procedures for scars. If the main problem is active acne, pronounced pigmentation or deep scars, a dermatological assessment and the choice of an appropriate method are needed first.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can be considered by individuals looking for surface freshening and a more even skin texture. Suitability depends on the skin condition and expectations, rather than just age or whether the skin is oily or dry.

Sensitivity, active changes and previous reactions to treatments should be reported before the procedure. Another method may also be recommended at the consultation.

Microdermabrasion can alleviate certain surface irregularities. Suitability and the expected effect are assessed before the treatment:

  • oily skin and surface impurities, without active inflammatory acne;
  • thickened, lifeless, grey skin (most commonly in smokers);
  • sun damage to the skin:
  • fades age spots and hyperpigmentation;
  • minimises enlarged pores;

Microdermabrasion can contribute to the removal of surface dead cells, a softer texture and a fresher skin appearance. The effect depends on the initial condition of the skin and does not represent the complete removal of scars, pores or pigmentation.

The procedure is non-invasive, but may cause redness, tenderness or swelling. A pre-treatment assessment is important for choosing the appropriate intensity and identifying reasons to postpone the procedure.

The treatment starts with skin cleansing. The surface is gradually treated using a diamond tip and vacuum, with the intensity adjusted and sensitive areas avoided. Finally, suitable skincare is applied.

Around 60 minutes are scheduled for the treatment at Imedic. The sensation and tolerability are individual; if any discomfort occurs, inform the person performing the procedure.

Following the treatment, follow the provided care and sun protection plan. The skin may be briefly red or sensitive, although a return to everyday activities often does not require an extended break.

Before you leave, agree on when you can use makeup, acids, retinoids and exfoliants again, as well as when you are returning to exercise. This also depends on other procedures done on the same day. Do not change the prescribed therapy without consulting your doctor.

Diamond microdermabrasion uses a diamond tip and vacuum for superficial mechanical exfoliation. Alma DermaClear hydrodermabrasion combines exfoliation, cleansing and hydration using special solutions and a vacuum.

The choice depends on the skin condition, sensitivity and treatment goal. No procedure is a replacement for the treatment of active skin diseases nor does it guarantee the removal of deep scars. Temporary skin reactions are possible.

Read more about choosing the method in the guide for deep facial cleansing, and for other procedures look at overview of facial treatments.

Sensitive skin requires assessment prior to treatment. It is important to distinguish between transient sensitivity and an active skin condition. If the skin stings, flakes or reacts to your usual skincare routine, please report this before booking.

The number of visits and intervals are determined individually, according to the goal and skin reaction. The next appointment is arranged after an assessment of recovery, with no universal schedule for everyone.

Ask what result is realistic for your skin, which reactions you can expect, how to prepare and care for your skin after the procedure. State previous treatments and the therapy you are using.

The treatment is not performed over active, inflamed, infected or damaged skin. Prior to the procedure, disclose any history of cold sores, rosacea, eczema, wounds, a tendency towards scarring and previous adverse reactions.

Tell your doctor which medicines and preparations you are using, including current or previous isotretinoin therapy, as well as whether you have a chronic illness, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. The decision on postponing and choosing the method is made based on an assessment; do not stop taking medicines on your own.
